Continence & Catheter Care

Continence and catheter care training helps care staff support people with continence needs and urinary catheters safely and with dignity. They learn when to seek clinical input, in line with current UK legislation, NICE guidance and sector best practice. Delivered on-site by our experienced trainers, with practical work wherever the subject allows.

About the course

Support continence needs and catheter care with dignity

By the end of the course, delegates will:

  • Understand the main types and causes of urinary incontinence, and know this should always be assessed rather than simply managed
  • Support someone with continence needs practically, promptly and with dignity
  • Understand how incontinence can present differently in older people and those living with dementia
  • Understand the basic anatomy of the urinary system and why catheters are used
  • Understand the different types of catheter and why one may be chosen over another
  • Follow current infection-prevention practice for catheter care, and recognise the signs of infection or complications
  • Document catheter and continence care accurately, in line with Regulations 12, 14, 17 and 18
  • Monitor and record fluid balance accurately, and recognise the signs of dehydration
  • Know when and how to escalate a concern about continence or catheter care to a nurse or senior colleague
