About the course

Care for a PEG tube and stoma site safely

By the end of the course, delegates will:

  • Understand what a PEG is, and the indications for its use
  • Know the anatomy and physiology of a PEG
  • Understand the mechanics of swallowing
  • Be aware of conditions that can affect swallowing
  • Know how to care for and clean stoma sites
  • Be aware of the common complications of PEGs
  • Recognise the signs of urgent complications, and what to do when indicated
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of professionals regarding PEGs

Which PEG course do you need?

  • PEG Care (half day) is for staff who support someone with a PEG but don’t give feeds or medicines through it. It covers what a PEG is, swallowing, stoma care and hygiene, complications and urgent problems, and who is responsible for what.
  • PEG & PEJ Care and Feeding (half day) is for staff who give feeds or medicines through the tube. It covers everything in PEG Care, plus PEJ tubes, feeding by pump and bolus, giving medication and flushing tubes.
