Care for people with epilepsy and understand its symptoms and treatment

By the end of the course, delegates will:

  • Be aware of the areas of the brain and their functions
  • Classify seizure types (focal, generalised, and their subtypes) and identify their symptoms
  • Identify common seizure triggers and non-epileptic events
  • Understand how epilepsy is diagnosed and the role of antiseizure medication
  • Understand alternative, non-medication management options
  • Know how to respond to an epileptic emergency, including the 10 first aid steps
  • Know the six situations that mean 999 should be called
  • Safely assist with buccal midazolam, if trained and authorised
  • Safely assist with rectal diazepam, if trained and authorised
  • Understand care plan documentation and yearly review requirements
  • Know relevant legislation, responsibilities and escalation routes
