About the course

Transport patients detained under the Mental Health Act safely and lawfully

By the end of the course, delegates will:

  • Understand what mental health is and recognise common mental health disorders
  • Understand the purpose, authorisation and rights under Mental Health Act Sections 2 and 3, and the key differences between them
  • Understand emergency detention under Section 4 and short-term holding powers under Section 5
  • Understand the forensic sections of the Mental Health Act, including hospital orders, restrictions, conditional discharge and recall (Sections 37–45)
  • Understand police powers to remove a person to a place of safety under Sections 135 and 136
  • Understand how and why patients can be recalled to hospital under a court order
  • Apply correct handover procedures and understand your legal authority to convey, and where necessary restrain, a patient
  • Carry out an appropriate risk assessment and choose the right vehicle for each journey
  • Understand the Section 19 transfer authority and the documentation required for a lawful transfer
