By the end of the course, delegates will:
- Know the three main stoma types: colostomy, ileostomy and urostomy
- Understand why each type is formed and how care needs differ
- Know how to safely change and empty each type of appliance
- Apply current infection prevention and control practice
- Recognise good skin care and manage common complications
- Recognise serious complications that need urgent escalation
- Understand nutrition, hydration and medication needs by stoma type
- Understand your role and the limits of your competence
- Support residents’ mental health, capacity and wellbeing

Understanding stomas
- What is a stoma — an opening created surgically for waste
- Three types — colostomy, ileostomy and urostomy
- Site and output differ significantly by type
Caring for stoma appliances
- One-piece and two-piece appliance systems
- Changing and emptying technique
- Cleaning the stoma area and skin care
Waste disposal and infection control
- Offensive waste vs clinical waste (HTM 07-01)
- Hand hygiene — 20 seconds, soap and water
- PPE — gloves, apron and splash protection
Supporting residents with a stoma
- Privacy, dignity and independence
- Nutrition, hydration and diet by stoma type
- Mental health, dementia and the Mental Capacity Act 2005
Recognising and managing complications
- Skin irritation and other skin problems
- Rectal or stomal discharge
- Stoma blockage — signs and first response
Serious complications requiring urgent escalation
- Parastomal hernia
- Prolapse and retraction
- Stomal ischaemia and necrosis — call 999

How long is the Stoma Care course?
It runs as a half day – 3 hours course, delivered in one visit unless stated otherwise.
How many delegates can attend?
Up to 15 delegates per session.
Do delegates receive a certificate?
Yes — every delegate receives a certificate on completion. Certificates are valid for 1 year, so plan refresher training before they expire.
