Verification of death training helps your team recognise and verify a death confidently and compassionately, and support residents, families and colleagues afterwards, in line with current UK legislation and best practice. Why this training matters
In 2023, 581,363 deaths were registered in England and Wales — many of them expected deaths that a competently trained registered nurse can verify (though only a doctor can certify), which is why formal, competency-based verification matters.

Recognise and verify a death with confidence and compassion
By the end of the course, delegates will:
- Understand the difference between recognition, verification and certification of death
- Know the timeframes for timely verification — within 1 hour in hospital, 4 hours in the community
- Recognise when a death must be referred to the coroner
- Know notifiable infectious diseases and the role of the Medical Examiner
- Understand the DNACPR decision-making process
- Can perform a verification of death examination following the 5-minute observation protocol
- Understand RN responsibilities before, during and after verification of death
- Know how to support families immediately after death and during last offices
- Understand religious and cultural considerations in care after death
- Know how to mentor and support staff
